Chattanooga Arrests and Busted Records
Chattanooga is the seat of Hamilton County and its biggest city. The 2020 Census put the population at 181,099. The Chattanooga Police Department, known locally as CPD, patrols the city. Here is the catch. CPD says plainly that it does not run a jail. A city arrest therefore usually creates two records. One is a CPD incident report. The other, after transfer, is a county booking entry kept by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
HCSO Corrections runs the Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center as the intake point for county arrestees, no matter which agency made the arrest. That handoff explains a common puzzle. A Chattanooga name may be missing from city news or the police site. Yet the official custody information sits with HCSO. The city report describes the police event. The jail record covers booking and where the person is now.
Note: A booked charge can be reduced, dismissed, diverted, or resolved another way, so confirm the final case result with Hamilton County Criminal Courts.
Where Chattanooga Busted Mugshots Appear
Start with official sources. HCSO's Inmate Information covers current custody, and its Booking Reports page lists bookings by date. CPD's own pages offer police contacts and record routing, though the city has no standalone arrest log, daily booking feed, or public photo feed. No city blotter does not mean no arrest. It simply points you back to the county jail and its records channels.
| Channel | What it covers | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| HCSO Inmate Information | Current jail custody, searched by last name or SPN# | Official, but no public photo display is guaranteed |
| HCSO Booking Reports | Bookings selected by date | Official date report, not an advertised rolling window |
| Chattanooga Police | City police contacts and originating reports | Official police source, not a jail roster |
| Chattanooga Sentinel | Day-search local booking archive with photos and charges | Unofficial local archive, not proof of current custody |
| NewsChannel 9, WDEF, and Times Free Press | Selected public-safety reporting | Editorial coverage, not an every-booking feed |
The local Sentinel archive stands out for day-based booking material. Bigger outlets pick and choose which stories to run. Busted Newspaper, Mugshots.com, and Arrests.org also carry county-local pages tagged for Chattanooga. These services have limits. They can lag, miss a transfer, or hold old material long after the fact. Treat them as a clue to a date or an agency, nothing more. Then verify the identity, custody status, and case outcome against the official source.
Lookup a Chattanooga Busted Booking
Accuracy comes from working the record system in its own order. The jail lookup answers who is in local custody right now. The date report answers who was booked on a given day. The police report covers the event CPD investigated. Each result is its own record. Compare identifying details wherever the official source provides them.
- Open HCSO Inmate Information and search the last name or SPN# if known. Compare any available date of birth, bond, judge, division, and court date.
- If the person is not in the current index, use the full inmate list and select the relevant date on HCSO Booking Reports. The date selector is the official booking route, not a promise of a 24-, 48-, or 72-hour feed.
- Request the CPD-originating report through the city record channel when the arresting agency or event details matter. Give the name, approximate date, and a narrow description of the record.
- For the case result, contact Hamilton County Criminal Courts. Court disposition is the later record that can confirm whether an charge led to a conviction, dismissal, or another outcome.
Roster entries vanish all the time. Someone gets released, transferred, or the entry gets corrected, and the name drops off the list. That does not wipe out the other records. By the same token, a dated booking report or an old outside listing cannot tell you a person is still locked up. Keep the two ideas separate. This matters most when a Chattanooga arrest moves from CPD into the county system within hours.
Chattanooga Police Records Route
Split the request by agency. The city handles CPD incident and arrest reports. HCSO holds the jail booking material. Chattanooga's Open Records page and city portal are the formal paths for a city request. Tennessee sets copy fees at 15 cents for black-and-white and 50 cents for color. Electronic delivery and current portal instructions can override both. So confirm the method and any charge before you submit.

The Chattanooga Police Department's official page marks the city route for incident and arrest-report questions.
The department page tells you which city agency handled an event. Its no-jail statement also explains why the county jail comes next for booking and custody questions.
For a county request, HCSO points Tennessee Open Records Requests to openrecords@hcsheriff.gov. Its Records Office answers at 423-209-7111. Name the person, the approximate booking date, the arresting agency, and the record you want. Tennessee calls for a response or acknowledgement within seven business days. That clock is no promise of release. Exceptions and active investigations sometimes block what a requester hoped to get.
Chattanooga Busted Jail Handoff
CPD does not run its own lockup. People arrested by the city get transferred to Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center at 601 Justice Way. CPD sends all jail questions to HCSO. After that handoff, the county's custody record is the strongest official source on whether someone is held. The arresting department still matters, though. Its police report explains the event itself.
HCSO's public roster offers a last-name or SPN# lookup along with a full-list view. Nothing on the interface promises a photo, a set update cadence, or a retention period. One internal document, the Public Relations SOP, does say booking photos usually reach media within one to two hours depending on staffing and queue. That describes the media pipeline only. It is not a pledge that an image will appear on a public page at any fixed time.
Chattanooga Booking Reports by Date
HCSO Booking Reports works off a date selector. Pick the booking or report date you care about. Then compare what comes back against the current roster. There is no same-day panel, no weekly summary, and no declared update schedule, so the tool stays strictly one-date-at-a-time. If several days matter, run each date on its own rather than treating the page as a multi-day city blotter.
CPD publishes no standalone daily arrest log or booking feed. That gap keeps requests clean. Ask CPD for the police report, HCSO for booking and custody material, and the court for how the case ends. When the web report falls short, a date-bounded HCSO records request is the official fallback.
The full-list view runs alphabetical. An individual custody result can show bond, judge, division, court date, visitation details, or notification setup whenever those fields are filled. Availability varies from case to case. Neither view discloses a photo policy or a permanent retention plan, so think of it as current custody plus date-selected reports, with a formal request filling any gaps.
Chattanooga Busted News Is Secondary
Chattanooga draws the widest local news coverage in the county. NewsChannel 9, WDEF's Hamilton County arrest tag, and the Times Free Press all cover notable incidents. Coverage stays selective and editorial, though. A photo attached to a story could be an agency image, a scene shot, or a file picture. Assume nothing about it being a booking photograph or a full account of the case.
Chattanooga Sentinel runs a dedicated bookings archive. It offers day-oriented local material with photos and charge fields, yet it is still a non-government archive. The big commercial aggregators are unofficial too, and often stale or incomplete. Official records lead the way because they identify the arresting agency, current custody, and the court route. Treat news and outside indexes as leads to verify, not case summaries.
For the wider outlet landscape, the county's separate Crime News & Mugshots page collects it in one place. On any individual Chattanooga matter, confirm the record with the originating office before repeating what a story says.
Chattanooga Custody Can Change
Local jail custody is just one status. Someone released from Hamilton County Jail drops off its current roster. A person moved into state felony custody or supervision shows up instead in the TDOC Felony Offender Information Lookup, which is a different animal from a Chattanooga booking roster. Federal custody runs through its own locator. Each system answers a different question.
Immigration custody sits apart as well. CPD notifies Homeland Security after handing someone to jail staff, but no Hamilton County ICE contract or local ICE photo source has been established. If an immigration transfer becomes the question, the ICE Online Detainee Locator is the right tool, not a local roster result. Court and state or federal custody records can shift well after the local booking stage.
